The first 90 days of local SEO for a brand-new Markham business is a setup sprint, not a ranking guarantee. Claim and verify Google Business Profile, lock NAP (name, address, phone), publish a few service pages, and collect honest first reviews. Meaningful movement usually takes longer than a quarter.
This page is a calendar. The system overview — the six-part loop of profile, website, citations, reviews, content, tracking — lives in Local SEO for new Markham businesses: a beginner’s playbook. Use that when you want the map. Use this when you want “what do I do in week 3?”
No one can honestly sell you a map-pack rank by day 90. Our own SEO cost timeline is the one we will repeat here: month 1 is audit and setup; months 2–3 are content and citations; months 3–6 are when most local businesses see meaningful ranking and traffic movement.
Why the first 90 days are a setup sprint
A brand-new Markham company has no review history, no citation graph, and often a website that still says “lorem.” Google does not owe you a local pack slot because you incorporated last Tuesday.
What you can finish in 90 days is the file Google needs in order to trust you:
- a verified Google Business Profile with the right category
- one name, address, and phone used everywhere
- a handful of pages that say what you do and where
- a few real reviews from people you actually served
- a short list of consistent directory citations
That is inventory, not a result. Treat it like opening the shop: you still have to show up after the sign goes up.
Month 1 (weeks 1–4): claim, verify, lock NAP
Week 1 — claim the profile. Search for the business on Google. If a listing already exists (common after you put the address on the website), request ownership. If nothing exists, add the business. Use the legal or public-facing name you will keep, not a keyword-stuffed “Markham Emergency Plumber Near Me Inc.”
Week 1–2 — verify. Google assigns the method; you do not pick from a menu. Google Business Profile Help currently lists phone/SMS, email, live video call, video recording, and postcard. If you are eligible for video, Google recommends it. Postcard codes, when that method is offered, usually arrive within 14 days, must not be re-requested (a new request voids the code in the mail), and expire after 30 days. After you submit, Google may take up to 5 business days to finish the review. Instant verification can happen if the same Google account already has Search Console on your site.
Do not edit the name, address, or category while a postcard is in transit. That is the mistake that restarts the clock.
Week 2 — NAP freeze. Write one line and reuse it:
1005-3601 Highway 7 East, Markham, ON L3R 0M3 plus the phone you will publish — for us, (905) 305-7800 if this is a Markham Office address, or your own number if you operate from a shop. “Street” vs “St.”, missing unit numbers, and a second mobile number on Facebook are how listings split. If you use a virtual office as the public address, that is the address that goes on the profile, the website footer, and every directory — not your home.
Week 3 — finish the profile. Primary category first (the one you most want to rank for), then a few honest secondary categories. Hours, service area or service-area-and-storefront, description in plain language, photos of the real space or real jobs. The ordered list is in our Google Business Profile optimization checklist.
Week 4 — website footer and contact page. Same NAP. Same hours. A Google Map embed that points at the same pin. If the site is not live yet, get a one-page contact live before you chase directories; citations into a dead site waste the month.
Month 2 (weeks 5–8): pages, citations, first reviews
Weeks 5–6 — 3 to 5 service pages. Not 30. Each page is one service a Markham customer would actually search (“kitchen plumbing,” “corporate tax filing,” “open-house photography”), with the city in the title where it is natural, a real explanation, a photo, and a way to call or book. Location pages can wait unless you truly serve distinct cities with distinct proof.
Week 6–7 — core citations. Google Business Profile, your website, and then the boring directories people still copy from: Canada 411-style listings, industry associations, a Chamber page if you joined. Identical NAP. Skip the $5 “submit to 1,000 directories” emails.
Week 7–8 — first reviews. Ask after a completed job, while the person is still pleased. Send a direct review link. Reply to every review — including the lukewarm ones. Do not buy reviews, trade products for five stars, or have staff post as customers. How to get more Google reviews is the longer version of that rule.
You will not have 50 reviews at day 60. You want a handful that look like a real Markham week, not a burst from one IP address.
Month 3 (weeks 9–12): replies, one good extra page, tracking
Reviews become a habit. One ask per completed job, every week, not a campaign.
Publish one useful local page — an answer to a question you already take on the phone (“Do I need a permit for…,” “How we serve Unionville vs downtown Markham”). Thin “best of Markham” listicles do not count.
Turn on tracking you will actually look at:
- Google Business Profile insights: calls, direction requests, website taps
- Search Console on the new service pages
- A simple sheet: reviews this month, citations live, pages published
Google map pack ranking in Markham is the deeper ranking piece. Do not obsess over a daily pack screenshot in month 3. Watch whether calls from the profile are going up.
Optional paid help. If you would rather not run this calendar yourself, our published Local Starter plan is $299/month, month-to-month (GBP, core local SEO, citations, reporting). $599 and $999 add content and authority work. None of those tiers includes a guaranteed rank. Details are on local SEO and the cost post above.
What “done” looks like on day 90
You are in good shape if:
- the profile is verified and complete
- NAP matches on the site, the profile, and your main citations
- 3–5 service pages are live and crawlable
- a few genuine reviews exist and every one has a reply
- you can open GBP insights without guessing the password
You are not “done” if you expected to own “Markham dentist” or “emergency plumber near me.” Those terms are a 3–6 month (or longer) fight. The 90-day win is that you are finally eligible to compete.
Start the 90 days with the right address
Local SEO is easier when the address on the registry, the website, and Google is a real Markham street — not a P.O. box and not three versions of home. If you still need that address, a virtual office at 1005-3601 Highway 7 East is the usual fix. If you want someone else to run the 90-day file, start on local SEO or call (905) 305-7800. We will not promise a pack ranking as a welcome gift.
