How to figure out HST in Ontario

Ontario’s HST is 13% — a 5% federal GST plus an 8% provincial portion, combined into one Harmonized Sales Tax. Here is the GST/HST math the calculator above runs for you.

Adding HST

Multiply the pre-tax amount by 13% and add it on. On $100: $100 × 0.13 = $13 HST, for a $113 total.

Figuring HST out of a total

To back the tax out of a tax-included price, divide the total by 1.13. On $113: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST was $13.

Every province works the same way — switch the province above to figure out GST, HST, PST or QST anywhere in Canada.

GST/HST — common questions

How much is HST in Ontario?
HST in Ontario is 13% — a 5% federal (GST) portion plus an 8% provincial portion, combined into a single Harmonized Sales Tax.
How do I calculate reverse HST from a total?
To back HST out of a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by 1 plus the rate. In Ontario, base = total ÷ 1.13, and the HST is the difference. Switch this tool to “Remove tax” and it does it for you.
How do I figure out GST and HST in Ontario?
To figure out HST in Ontario, apply the 13% rate. Adding tax: multiply the pre-tax amount by 1.13 (or ×0.13 for the tax on its own). Figuring HST out of a tax-included total: divide by 1.13. This calculator handles both — set it to “Add tax” or “Remove tax”, choose Ontario, and it figures out the GST and HST for you.
What’s the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the 5% federal tax that applies across Canada. HST provinces (like Ontario) combine the federal and provincial portions into one rate. Other provinces charge GST plus a separate provincial sales tax (PST), or QST in Quebec.
Do I have to charge GST/HST on my sales?
Once your business makes more than $30,000 in gross revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register for a GST/HST number and charge tax. Below that threshold you’re a “small supplier” and registration is optional.
