DIY is enough when you need a simple site and can run your own Google Business Profile. Hire an agency when you need conversion, local rankings, or time you do not have. Published 2026 ranges: DIY sites about $15–$50 a month, market SEO about $500–$2,500 a month. Our own SEO plans are $299, $599 and $999.

A new Markham shop does not need a $10,000 brand film to take a first booking. It also should not pretend a Google Sites page and a neglected map listing will outrank a clinic that has been publishing for three years. Match the tool to the stage.

When DIY is enough

Stay owner-run when all of this is true:

  • You sell one or two services in a small radius (Unionville, Markham, a few GTA cities — not "nationwide").
  • You can write plain pages: who you are, what you do, price or a "call for quote," hours, and a phone number that you answer.
  • You will actually log into Google Business Profile every week: photos, posts, review replies.
  • Nobody is paying you yet for a polished funnel; you are testing demand.

Google Sites (or a simple Google-hosted page) plus an owner-run GBP is a valid first stack if you already live in Google Workspace. Shopify is the DIY path if you sell products and need a cart, not if you are a two-person accounting firm. Wix and Squarespace sit in the same DIY band we already published: about $15–$50 per month for the builder subscription, hosting and templates included. You supply the hours, the words, and the photos.

What DIY will not do well: a competitive local niche (dentists, HVAC, immigration consultants), bilingual pages you will not maintain, or a site that has to rank for "near me" against firms that already buy content every month.

If you are still asking whether you need a site at all, start with do you need a website in 2026. Social plus GBP can carry a tiny service business for a while. They do not replace a URL you own when a lender, a landlord, or a serious B2B buyer asks.

When to hire an agency

Hire when one of these shows up:

  • You are losing calls to competitors who occupy the map pack and you cannot spend ten hours a week on listings and pages.
  • The DIY site looks like a template and you can feel clients bounce before they call.
  • You need more than a brochure: booking, bilingual copy, or a store.
  • You tried owner-run SEO for a quarter and nothing moved.

"Agency" here means a person or team who will do the work on a defined scope — not a $99 ranking guarantee. Cheap SEO red flags (guaranteed #1, spammy links, no reporting) are covered in the cost guide; do not buy them to "catch up."

A freelancer can be the middle: our published small-business site range for a freelancer is about $500–$3,000 one-time. Typical agencies sit at about $1,500–$10,000+. Those are 2026 market ranges from the website-cost post, not a quote. Our own published site tiers are a Starter Site at $799, a Business Website at $1,499, and a Premium / online store at $2,999 (one-time). Extra pages, a logo kit, and photos are listed on that same page if you need them — we will not invent new add-on prices here.

Website cost: reuse the published ranges

From how much a website costs in Canada in 2026:

Path Typical cost You do
DIY builder ~$15–$50 / month Design, copy, photos, updates
Freelancer ~$500–$3,000 one-time Brief, content, aftercare questions
Agency (market) ~$1,500–$10,000+ one-time Discovery, a team, usually support
Markham Office Starter / Business / Store $799 / $1,499 / $2,999 one-time Provide the facts; we build

Ongoing is separate from the build. Domain is typically about $15–$25 a year. DIY builders fold hosting into the monthly fee. A care plan that bundles hosting and updates is $49/month on that same published page. Budget both numbers before you call anyone "cheap."

SEO cost: reuse the published ranges

From how much SEO costs per month for a GTA small business:

Most GTA small businesses should expect roughly $500–$2,500 per month in 2026. Lean starter packages in the wider market from around $399; larger agencies $1,000–$5,000+. Our local plans, month-to-month: $299 (Local Starter), $599 (Local + AI Visibility), $999 (Local + AI Authority).

SEO is a retainer because rankings fade when the work stops. A one-off "SEO package" that never touches GBP, citations, or new pages is a project, not a ranking engine. Local map-pack work usually moves faster than broad keywords. Plan on months, not thirty days.

Owner-run SEO can mean: you optimize the GBP, you collect reviews, you add two real service pages, you keep NAP consistent. That is free except your time. It is enough in a quiet niche. It is not enough against a funded clinic on Highway 7.

A practical split for a new Markham business

Do this yourself:

  • Claim and complete Google Business Profile (if you are eligible — a virtual office is not a storefront by default; see the GBP rules post).
  • Answer the phone on a local number.
  • Photograph real jobs, not stock.
  • Write three honest pages if you are on DIY.

Hire for:

  • A site that has to convert, not merely exist — website design.
  • Citations, GBP maintenance, content, and reporting you will not do every month — local SEO.
  • Bilingual pages if Mandarin and English both have to stay accurate.

A common Markham sequence: Shopify or Google Sites for ninety days, owner-run GBP, then a $799-class site plus a $299 SEO starter when the calendar is full enough that you would rather pay than write. The reverse — buying $999 SEO onto a one-page DIY URL with no reviews — wastes the retainer.

We sit at 1005-3601 Highway 7 E. If you also need the address and a room to film the "about" video, virtual office from $49/month, desk $299, private serviced office from $1,000 (two to three people), meeting rooms $35/hour ($25 members). (905) 305-7800. The marketing work is still the two links above: website design when DIY has hit its ceiling, local SEO when you want the map pack worked by someone who will show a price before a call.
